NIMONA TITLE REVEAL

Collaborators: Syeda Fyruje and John Beyea

Title Reveal is a collaborative project between Fyruje and I, in which we created a title reveal for an upcoming movie, Nimona. Nimona is a techno-medieval animated film based on a graphic novel about a defamed knight and the titular Nimona, a shape-shifting teen, and the labels thrust on them. So, our first task was to conceptualize this theme and this setting.

WHY NIMONA

Worldbuilding… Fantasy? Adventure!

Many options were available, however, Fyruje and I determined quickly what our mutual interests were. Both of us are fascinated with the fantasy/adventure genre and worldbuilding. While it wasn’t the only member of it’s genre available, it held the distinction of the more novel world, that being techno-medieval–

And we read the book.

OUR GOALS

Entering the creative process we had clear goals.

Nimona is a shape-shifter. We needed to communicate the character’s transformation and the refusal to be boxed in. As a genre, fantasy and adventure take us on journeys across many locations.Combined these ideas together, we needed to take the viewer on a journey.

Through this, we conceptualized the logo reveal as an exploration and ensemble story archetype. We’d travel across multiple places showing various pieces of the title in stages of transformation, building to the reward at the end of a very chaotic adventure.

CREATIVE PROCESS

Our first step was to establish our type and thus the logo itself. Fantasy type, is often decorative, serif, thin and tall. Science Fiction type, is often clean, sans-serif, and can be blocky. This had to exist in both worlds. Our font achieves this with thin lines, curving strokes allow for it to be delicate and clean sharp angles allow it to be clean.

FINAL DESIGNS

After going through several design explorations a complimentary green and red color palette was chosen, this allowed oppressive reds and vivid greens, but also soft pinks and dreamy limes, which became the foundation for our changing worlds and tonal shifts. Then to contrast our sharp assets and more saturated colors in the foreground the background became soft, with balanced compositions, and gradients to invoke the fantasy.
