PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

Entering this project I needed to answer some questions about my intent and identity as an artist. What subject matter am I most interested in? What Themes? What styles? What do I want my portfolio to reflect?

INSPIRATIONS AND THUMBNAILS

Having selected the values I’d focus on I began work on the thumbnails and began reflecting on the art and styles that most influence me: Hayao Miyazaki’s movies, cartoons like Adventure Time, fantasy media like Lord of the Rings, as well as Pokemon and other Nintendo games. And then at my previous work.

The environment was a recurring theme I wanted to embrace. I wanted to hit fun, lighthearted, or juvenile tones. And I knew I liked illustrative, comic book or cartoon inspired renderings.

ADVENTUROUS

Most of my work focuses on nature and fantasy, certainly my favorite pieces have. I’d like to make work that reveres and elevates the mundane parts of nature which we take for granted. The rocks, moss, and vines in this case.

IMAGINATIVE

Imaginative is something I aspire too. While still drawing from the real world and from nature, chrysanthemums, the cosmos, water’s surface, as well as some surrealist art.

The challenge with Imaginative and Adventurous was cel animation. A medium I’d avoided for too long. Though in reflecting on my inspirations and work, I realized I’d need to embrace it to create the kind of work I was most compelled by.

PLAYFUL

Drawing most from the tone of the media that speaks to me I came to ‘playful’. Cartoons, video games, and comics are big influences on me and are often seen as juvenile despite the wide range of stories and messages they deliver and the clarity in that. In the playful animation it was important to make something that looked fun, bouncy, and childish. I used halftone and hatching to add a comic or pop-art style.
